Understanding Weight and Volume in Freight Quotes

Logistics guide

A shipment has both physical weight and space requirements. Depending on the service, a quotation may consider measured weight, volume or a chargeable-weight calculation.

Start with reliable cargo measurements

• Record the outer length, width and height of each packed unit. Include pallets, crates and protruding packaging, and state the measurement units.
• Separate quantity from weight per piece. For mixed packages, provide a line for each size rather than applying one average dimension to the entire shipment.
• Use a calculator for planning, then ask the quoting provider to confirm its measurement method, conversion factor and rounding rules for the proposed service.

Before you proceed

A planning calculation is not a final carrier assessment. Recheck the quote if packaging, quantity or measurements change before collection.
